Reading a VIN
Seventeen characters, stamped in several places on every vehicle built since 1981. Most people never look at it. It will tell you where the car was built, what’s in it, and often whether somebody has been lying about its history.

A VIN is regulated, not arbitrary. NHTSA made the 17-character format mandatory, so every legitimate vehicle on an American road carries one, and every character in it means something specific.
You’ll see it through the windshield on the driver’s side of the dash. Don’t stop there. It’s also on the driver’s door jamb, on the engine block, and stamped into the frame. If those do not match, you’ve found something. That single check is the most valuable thing in this article and it takes two minutes.
The three sections

Characters 1 to 3 — who built it
The first character is the country or region of manufacture. The next two identify the
manufacturer and division. 1HG is Honda; 1, 4 and
5 are the United States, 2 is Canada, 3 is Mexico,
J is Japan, W is Germany, K is South Korea.
A 9 in the third position usually means a small-volume manufacturer, in which
case positions 12 to 14 carry additional manufacturer identification rather than serial
data.
Characters 4 to 9 — what it is
Body style, engine type, restraint system, model line. The manufacturer decides the exact encoding, which is why decoding this section properly means going through NHTSA rather than guessing.
Position 9 is the check digit, and it’s the useful one. It isn’t arbitrary — it’s calculated from the other sixteen characters by a fixed formula. If the check digit doesn’t match the rest of the number, the VIN is either mistranscribed or it has been altered. This is the single fastest test for a fabricated VIN and it’s arithmetic, not opinion.
Characters 10 to 17 — which one
Position 10 is the model year. Position 11 is the assembly plant. Positions 12 to 17 are the sequential serial number, which is what makes the whole string unique.
Two traps. I, O and Q never appear anywhere in a VIN, because they’re too easily confused with 1 and 0 — if you think you’re reading one, you’re reading a digit. And the year codes cycle every thirty years, so the same character that means 2005 also meant 1975. On an older vehicle, confirm the year against something else.

What a VIN check gets you
- Title status — clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood
- Prior registrations and how many owners
- Insurance claims and reported accidents
- Open recalls
- Reported odometer readings, which is how rollback shows up
- Service locations, where the records are accessible

All of them miss things. An accident never reported to an insurer doesn’t exist in any of these. Neither does anything that happened after the last title transfer. Corroborate before you rely on it.
What a VIN will not tell you
- The current registered owner. That requires DMV or NMVTIS access under the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, and you need a permissible purpose
- Where it was serviced, without dealer cooperation
- Accidents never claimed on insurance
- Police records, absent a subpoena or law enforcement access
And be alert to VIN cloning — a clean VIN from a legitimate vehicle copied onto a stolen one. The clone will check out perfectly in a commercial database precisely because the number belongs to a real, unremarkable car somewhere else. Physical inspection of every stamping location, and a check against NCIC through law enforcement, is what catches it.
How a real one goes
Suspect vehicle, sold under circumstances that don’t sit right:
- Read the VIN from the dash, then verify it at the door jamb, the engine and the frame
- Run NICB — not reported stolen, but a salvage record comes back
- Run a history check — totalled in Florida, rebuilt in another state
- Cross-reference a paid report — odometer rollback and three owner changes
- Verify against DMV — the title history contradicts what the seller said
None of those steps is conclusive alone. Together they establish enough inconsistency to justify a great deal more inquiry.
Working practice
- Check the VIN in every location on the vehicle, every time
- Run it through at least two independent databases
- Assume cloning is possible on anything that looks too clean for its price
- Buy the paid report when it’s going into litigation or an insurance dispute
- Know the access rules in your jurisdiction before requesting owner or service data
The VIN gives you the trail. It doesn’t walk it for you. Use it to point yourself in a direction, then confirm what it suggested from a source that can be cited.
